How do I know if we should see a speech-language pathologist?

A Cognitive-Communication Evaluation & Therapy Is Recommended if You or Your Loved One Has Any of the Following Symptoms….

Difficulty functioning independently due to issues with:

  • Anticipating the consequences of one’s actions
  • Poor organization, limited problem-solving, and reduced judgment
  • Limited awareness of the extent of difficulties; may display socially inappropriate behavior
  • Understanding concepts of time or money
  • Self-disciplining or self-monitoring to follow rules
  • Adjusting to changes in routine or learning new rules
  • Selecting appropriate words or recalling names
  • Memory for current events or personal history
  • Conversational responses that are repetitive, redundant, or unrelated
  • Initiating, ending, or appropriately shifting topics in conversation
  • Missing or misunderstanding humor
  • Interpreting nonverbal communication (facial expressions, body language)
  • Understanding abstract information

Difficulty managing responsibilities at home or work, including problems with:

  • Planning and completing activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Following simple or complex directions
  • Comprehending or applying abstract written information
  • Analyzing personal or job-related problems
  • Identifying solutions and applying them appropriately
  • Managing multiple responsibilities at the same time

How do I make an appointment and what should I expect?

Step 1 – Contact physician’s office to request a Speech Therapy Referral from either your Primary Care Physician or your Specialty Provider and fax to our office 800-592-9749.

Step 2 Brighter Pathways Speech & Cognitive Services will reach out once we have received and reviewed your referral. If our services are appropriate for your needs, we will contact you to schedule an appointment. Please note that some insurance plans require prior authorization. Our office will handle this process before your appointment. We also accept private pay. If you have not heard from us within two weeks, please call our office at 570-979-1199.

Step 3 – New client paperwork will be mailed to you, please complete the paperwork and bring to your first appointment.

Step 4 – A full evaluation will assess multiple skill areas, identify strengths and weaknesses, and guide creation of an individualized treatment plan.

Step 5 – Following assessment, we develop an individualized plan of treatment targeting speech, language, cognitive, and/or swallowing goals. Therapy is tailored to each client’s specific needs and designed to promote meaningful progress and independence.

Who is required to come to the initial appointment?

To support the best possible care, we ask that the client and a care partner, family member, or friend attend the first in-office appointment.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept most major insurance plans. We will verify your insurance benefits to determine coverage and obtain prior authorization if required by your plan. We also accept private payment and will gladly provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.
